Mother Tongue Languages
Learning Outcomes
The MTL curriculum aims to develop proficient language users who can communicate confidently and effectively in various real-life contexts; and to expose students to cultures and values through MTL lessons.
In Peicai, the MTL curriculum aims to
Strengthen student’s communication skills to be able to use their MTL as a living language both in school and out of school.
Deepen student’s appreciation of culture by understanding their unique identity through deeper appreciation of culture, traditions, literature, and history.
Better connect students with communities in local context and across Asia including the world.
Lessons conducted focus on developing students’ critical thinking and creative thinking skills. Teachers will leverage ICT tools to provide students with more interactive and real-life authentic learning, to promote self-directed and collaborative learning.
We support these endeavours through a repertoire of interactive and innovative teaching strategies, which are customised to student’s learning needs.
Experiential Learning is integrated to allow students to make connections of the real-world context.
Assessment Framework
The use of a variety of assessment modes aims to allow for better instructional tool to promote students’ learning. Hence, assessment does not only serve as an evaluative tool. Some of the assessment modes include:
- Self, peer and teacher assessment
- Oral Presentation
- Formative and Summative testing
Programmes
Chinese Language and Culture
Chinese Language
To achieve our Mother Tongue department mission, we embark on several programmes to enhance our students’ language skills. These programmes aimed at enhancing the necessary language skills, i.e speaking, listening, reading and writing. Our key programmes include ‘Class Library Programme’, the ‘MTL Intensive Programme for our Graduating Classes’ as well as the ‘Conversational Chinese and Malay Programme’ for our Secondary One student’s.
Chinese Culture
To inspire the students’ love for their culture, and to seize every opportunity to teach our students values, we organise the following activities for our students each year:
Chinese New Year Concert
On the Chinese New Year celebration concert, students were engaged in a festive mood by the mere presence of the God of Fortune and the Lion Dance Troupe. This year, we had the privilege of our alumni, Glenn Yong to join us in the celebration. He sang a few songs including singing along Chinese New Year songs to liven up the mood.
MT Fortnight Cultural activities for our students
In order to expose our students to different cultural activities, we organise various activities for our students during the Mother Tongue fortnight, such as traditional costume, bamboo slip, paper folding, tea appreciation and shadow puppet. One key highlight for this year is the sharing by students during Morning Assembly.
